Bachelor Cooking  - How to Barbeque a Steak

Eat Like a King for Around Five Bucks

If you decide that you want to eat like a king five minutes before dinner time, you are kidding yourself. To eat like a king, for the same cost as eating fast food, a little planning is necessary. Watch the supermarket advertisements. You will find great meat, like Porterhouse or Rib Eye for less than three dollars a pound!

However, real steak lovers are not satisfied for anything less than Filet Mignon.

How Dave Prepares a Steak Dinner
For Less than Five Bucks!

1. Thaw out the steak ahead of time. Look, you know on Monday that you are going to need to eat on Tuesday. So, make it easy on yourself and move the meat from the freezer to the fridge. If you forgot to defrost the steak, use the microwave, but read the "quick defrost settings" or you will ruin a perfectly good piece of meat! Bonless Rib Eye Steaks
2. Season the steak with dry ingredients first. I prefer Lindberg-Snider Seasoning, but many others are on the market. Remember to season both sides. Why? Because you won't both sides to taste good! Lindberg Seasoning
If you don't have a favorite beef seasoning, then you can make your own. Suggestions are pictured to the right --> Make Your Own Mix of Seasonings

3. Season the steak with wet ingredients. I prefer Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce. There is no substitute. Remember, flip the steaks in the dish and do both sides. Why? because you won't both sides to taste good! Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce

4. Light the barbeque. I strongly recommend getting one of these long lighters. You will be one funny looking fool when you burn your eyebrows off. Get a Good Lighter
5. Clean the grill. After the barbeque has warmed up for five or ten minutes, clean it! I suggest a brush like this. Recommended Grille Brush
6. Now it's time to drive the neighbors crazy! Place the steaks on the grille. Do not use a fork. You will pierce the steak and lose all the juices. I suggest using tongs like these. Use Tongs, Not a Forke
Steaks on the grille. Steaks on the Grille
7. Place the cover on the grille and let the smoke do the work. Don't worry about burning the steaks. The cover will prevent flames. Trust me on this. A good, smoked steak, is the only way to go. Let the Grille Smoke
8. I cook two 1 inch thick steaks, on high, for no more than 6 minutes on each side. For 2 inch thick steaks, I recommend 8 minutes on each side. If you follow my instructions, and leave the lid on, the barbeque will begin to smoke when it's time to flip the meat. I also suggest that you get a timer and use it.  That way, when the babe next door comes a knocking, you won't lose all the work so far! Timer
9. This step is very important. Relax, have a beer, and feel good about driving your neighbors absolutely crazy with the aroma of steak on the grille. Remember to Relax
10. Don't relax for too long. It's time to prepare the side dishes. I suggest sliced tomatoes and cottage cheese. If you can't pick your produce, get packaged tomatoes!

Oh, before I forget. Invest in a good knife and a steel to sharpen it before every use.  If you take care of it, it will last you a long time, and you will be less likely to spend the night bandaging your wounds.

Cottage Cheese is Good for You
Packaged Tomatoes
11. By now the timer has gone off. Use the tongs and flip the steaks. Wait for five more minutes.
12. Plate the steak and season the side dishes with a little salt and pepper.

Tip: A little Italian dressing or olive oil on the tomato slices is always a nice touch.
