Well, another half a million jobs gone in December. And considering that employers are loathe to lay people off right before the holidays, and have probably been waiting until after, that doesn't bode well for January.

I would guess this is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets any better. High unemployment should be phase II, followed by phase III: rampant inflation.

How is everybody faring out there? Me personally, I'm lookin for a job. Let's just say, it's interesting. Luckily The Wife has good job stability.

It's pretty scary when the Best Case Scenario is a return to 70's-era Stagflation. Worst Case, we are looking at baby pictures of a Depression.

Good luck to the next administration. Really. They're gonna need it.

Unfortunately Step,
I think that you are "pretty close to the truth" in your paragraphs one and two above.

As for me personally; I am still employed by Home Depot as I have been for the last 7 years. Home Depot has been very good to me, I hope that I can continue with HD until I retire in a few more years, then work part-time for HD after that.

Life is good.

Stability is the key!

More than half a million initial jobless claims in the week ending 1/10 alone!

Yikes!

Ya, it's scary alright! I just keep hoping it is like everything else that is over-reported by the media and that it won't last as long as the worst nay-sayers predict. I hope!!!!!!

How many of you own/lease an import? I've got a Ford, a Dodge, and a Chevy.

Buy American, or Bye Bye America.

My Civic was assembled in South Carolina, out of parts made mostly in America (the Ford Mustang, for example, is mostly foreign made junk parts). It is the finest vehicle I have ever owned.

My Ford ZX wagon was assembled in Mexico City out of parts made in Mexico, South Korea, etc. It has squeaked and groaned over every possible bump and around every turn since it was brand new. In addition to being subject to numerous recalls, the front right tire made a loud and embarrassing rhythmic squishing noise which the dealer told me I would "just have to live with."

I will never, I repeat NEVER buy another car from the "big three" under any circumstances. Bad enough that I, my kid, and her kids, are on the hook for a "bailout" that isn't going to keep them from going under, which is what is *supposed to happen to companies that SUCK in a FREE COUNTRY!!!*

If that makes me "unpatriotic," so be it.

Ford rocks. And it's not where it's made, it's where the profits flow!

Your kids are on the hook for a bailout because your government gave it away!

You think things are bad now? Wait until we move to the left 12 more degrees.

BTW, WTF is a Ford ZX Wagon? Real men drive F-series trucks!

Is there any place in these trucks that "real" men drive for real kids?!

So it's cool to move American jobs to other countries as long as the profits end up back here? PLEASE....

The Big Three are not making profits, Dave, their junk vehicles make losses. Instead of taking responsibility for these losses (like "real men" do), and making a better product more efficiently (which plenty of other companies are doing in - surprise, surprise -- America), they go to the government hat in hand (on a private jet) looking for Welfare. It's Socialism for the Rich. I don't think there are 12 degrees left to move.

I hope we would both agree that freedom (including the freedom to fail) is the answer. I personally am cool with Honda taking the profit (they've earned it with a great product), especially when they re-invest that profit in factories and jobs in America.

As for how bad it is, it's going to get much, much worse. That's kinda the point of this thread. "Bailouts" and "Stimulous" WON'T WORK. The government, by bi-partisan fiat (speaking of Fiat, they're in on the Bailout too....they have been aquired by GM) is giving away the store. We are quite a ways down that "slippery slope," and picking up speed.

In the week ending Jan. 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 589,000, an increase of 62,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 527,000.

Hey Step,
Thanks for remembering and asking about my job/situation.

I was at my Mom's room at the resthome when I first saw the CNN story about Home Depot's announcement today. Since I have been expecting HD to announce more closings and/or layoffs I was not caught totally off guard, but the reality of it was worrisome for me.

So I immediately used my cell phone and googled the situation. It seems that HD will be closing all "EXPO" stores and a few other stores that are not in sync with the HD Core Stores. These EXPO stores HD is closing now are "Very Up Market Specialty" stores that have never performed well.

Life is good.

Yeah, I guess the "up market" goes elsewhere....I wouldn't know!!

Here's hoping all of our situations only improve during this national mess....

Ya, I hope everyone weathers this storm one way or another.

I was feeling lucky this morning to be part of the untouched group in the HD current layoff scheme.

After I got to work I found out that some good friends of mine at Corporate got their termination notices yesterday. I can only hope that they can be reemployed (if they need) by HD during our upcoming spring hiring season.

Life is good.

Hey I will let you guys continue with your cat or dog fights! LOL

I am a Chevy girl married to a Ford Man...HA

I must admit that a few years ago I owned a Honda Prelude and really loved it! Mostly because it went fast and I lived in a place that I could drive fast. Service fees were very expensive though....

I think this government and the economy is going down hill. This is only the beginning. I worry for the future of my sons.... They are fortunate to also be Canadian citizens

UPDATE

After a couple of false starts, I am steadily employed by an evil corporation!

False Start #1: Delivering (artisan-quality) bread. They told me it would be full time and start at 4 AM. Turned out it was part time and started at 2 AM. They didn't lie, they just didn't know what their new contracts were going to demand of them. Lasted 3 or 4 weeks. And no, I never sampled the product. Just smelling it made me gain ten pounds!

False Start #2: Vending Machine Route. OK, these guys were douchebags. This place was what I like to call a "body shop." They recruit a "revolving door" of bodies, throw them up against a wall, and see who sticks. Only one guy -- of thousands -- had stuck for more than five years (18 years). The next guy down the line (almost five years) told me he had seen hundreds of people come and go, ond only eight or ten lasted more than a YEAR. Bottom line is, they wanted you to work FRANTICALLY, and get up to speed in a week or two. Lasted 6 or 7 weeks. Didn't sample this product, either. Ick.

Finally, in late June, I started at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (since puchased by Pfizer, makers of Viagra. BOOIIINNNNGGGG!!!). I've settled in nicely in their facilities dept., covering several different jobs (which makes me more useful; I'll learn/cover whatever they ask of me). I feel very lucky to be employed in this economy (the rampant inflation I predicted when I initiated this thread has arrived; anyone freaking out about the price of GROCERIES yet!!???). I'm getting paid more to work at a reasonable pace with people I like (not to mention 3.5 miles from my home; I go home for lunch every day!), than I've ever gotten to BREAK MY ASS in the past.

Life is good. I miss this site and hope everyone is doing well. Dave and Shel, the kids are adorable and they all look like they have such wonderfully different personalities!

Peace. Andy
